I hope that anyone who has visited the Florida Keys has sat on the edge of the Overseas highway with a fishing pole. I spent many a night along this veritable oasis, the ribbon of asphalt with the Atlantic ocean on one side, the Gulf of Mexico on the other, warm tropical breezes, and plenty of fish.

Although I have never seen a sailfish caught from a bridge, I wouldn't doubt that they do (or used to) come through the channels from time to time. Tarpon (the Silver King), grouper and snapper (about 10 varieties of each) and barracuda were always there, waiting for the offering of a lively shrimp.

The bridges pictured here, once part of the Overseas Railway, have also been replaced, but I believe they are still open as fishing platforms. The pilings these old bridges are built on (a monument to Henry Flagler's determination) have become part of the ecosystem, harboring tiny pinfish, shrimps and crabs. The beginning of the food chain eventually brings in the big boys.

I hope next time you're planning that trip to MickyWorld you will give some consideration to keeping southbound (don't bypass the Cypress Knee Museum). Head through the Everglades, take the old Card Sound Road . Stop at Alabama Jack's, keep pointed south and don't forget your fishing pole.
