The caption says this photo was taken from Pigeon Key, which was a part of University of Miami's Oceanographic Research Institute, turned over to Monroe County in the early 90's. This portion of the old 7 Mile Bridge is the only part that is still used for automobile traffic. Once a part of the Overseas Railroad (seen later on this tour), the Overseas Highway was built directly on top of the railway. A new system of bridges were built to replace them. These new and wider bridges were much safer (a truck and a Greyhound bus could not pass one another if they were moving in opposite directions). With the fear-factor and intimidation removed from driving "all the way", it opened the lower Keys to a much higher volume of traffic and subsequent (over) development. Fortunately, many of these old bridges have been designated as fishing piers. |
