This bridge, once part of the old Overseas Railroad, was the first to be replaced with a newer and wider double span crossing the Keys deepest channel. Recalling the few times I had been on this bridge I can understand why. After the 1935 Hurricane put an end to the railroad, the wooden roadway was actually built on top of the steel trestles, certainly not what the original intention of the engineers who designed it was. As a kid, it was both scary and a bit exciting, especially going over the "hump". Bahia Honda, once named "America's Nicest Beach" is a real gem in the Florida State Parks system. The 524 acre park was closed due to damage from Hurricane Georges in 1998, but has since reopened. I understand much of the natural shoreline went through some major "rearrangement" by Georges, but I'm sure her beauty still shows. |
