I wasn't too sure how to word the title of this one. I didn't want to refer to these people as "Indians", or "American Indians" (political correctness being what it is). The thought of them as being indigenous people of South Florida lent me to calling them natives, in the true sense. If you have ever spent any amount of time in the Everglades, you cannot help but to have a deep respect for these people, who still manage to keep their traditions in spite of the intrusion of the "White man".

Hundreds of years before Christopher columbus discovered the New World, the Tequesta Indians lived there. The first to appreciate South Florida's mild climate, the Tequestans lives simply. Abundant food supplied from the land and sea made agricultural activities unnecessary.

If you ever want to learn about these colorful people who still live in the Everglades, there's a terrific book titled "People of the Everglades" (maybe out of print), and "River of Grass", written by Marjorie Stoneman Douglass.
